Thirty years on from the film that changed everything, Trainspotting The Musical makes its world premiere in London’s West End before heading out on a major UK tour from October 2026.

Written by Irvine Welsh, with music and lyrics by Stephen McGuinness and Irvine Welsh, and directed and developed by Caroline Jay Ranger, this brand-new musical brings Renton, Sick Boy, Begbie, Spud, Tommy and Kelly back to the stage.

This is not a tidy nostalgia trip. Funny, loud, confrontational and full of dark energy, Trainspotting The Musical reworks the world of Irvine Welsh’s story for now – with new songs, classic tracks and a restless look at addiction, powerlessness and the search for something to fill the space.

Irvine Welsh has described the musical as having “a bigger, loudly beating human heart” than either the book or the film. Expect a provocative, life-affirming new stage experience that lets Trainspotting sing – and asks audiences to choose life all over again.
