"The hardest voice to find is your own"
Alone in the sanctuary of her small bedroom, Little Voice fills the air with pitch-perfect renditions of her late father’s prized record collection – from Judy Garland to Billie Holiday.
But when her mother Mari’s latest fling, local wheeler dealer Ray, hears her sing, he becomes convinced he has struck gold. Will Little Voice be pushed into a spotlight she never asked for?
Jim Cartwright’s modern classic The Rise and Fall of Little Voice returns in a major new production directed by Robert Hastie, National Theatre Deputy Artistic Director and director of Standing at the Sky’s Edge.
The production stars Francesca Mills as Little Voice, Jill Halfpenny as Mari and Paul Chuckle as Mr Boo, bringing this funny, tender and sharply observed story of family, fame and finding your own voice back to the stage.
The production plays the National Theatre’s Dorfman Theatre from December 2026 to January 2027, before touring theatres across England from February to March 2027.
WHAT IS THE RISE AND FALL OF LITTLE VOICE ABOUT?
Little Voice lives quietly in her bedroom, escaping into her late father’s record collection and singing pitch-perfect versions of the great divas.
When her mother’s latest boyfriend hears her voice, he sees a chance to turn her talent into money – pushing Little Voice towards a spotlight she never asked for.
